Church Nativity scene with gay figures vandalized (AP)

CLAREMONT, Calif. ? Vandalism of a church's Nativity display that includes depictions of gay and lesbian couples was being investigated as a hate crime, police said.

The damage at Claremont United Methodist Church occurred late Saturday or Sunday morning.

The display's three panels feature silhouettes of three hand-holding couples ? two men, two women and a heterosexual pair. The vandal knocked over the depictions of the gay and lesbian couples but left the straight couple alone.

"It's a hate crime based on it being church property as well as the wooden box knocked over that depicted two males holding hands," Claremont police Sgt. Jason Walters told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

The display created by artist church member John Zachary includes the phrase "Christ is born" and a Star of Bethlehem but no traditional manger figures. For the past six years, Zachary has designed and built a scene on the church's front lawn. The scene has had controversial themes before, but this was the first about gay couples, the Daily Bulletin said.

Zachary said the artwork suffered at least $3,000 worth of damage. The exhibit had three panels that weighed 600 pounds each.

The Rev. Dan Lewis said he was saddened by the incident.

"We have members of our church who are gay and lesbian who it sends a very personal message to," said Lewis, who learned of the vandalism on Christmas Day. "I tried to say in worship on Sunday morning that we will not let it trouble us."

Ed Kania, 60, an openly gay member of the church, called the act of vandalism disappointing, especially because Claremont is a generally seen as a progressive college town.

"It's a reminder that although there are pockets of acceptance, not everybody is accepting," he told the Los Angeles Times. "We're all kind of disappointed, but we're using it as a rallying point."

Legal and Symbolic Relationships | Weddingbee

Both of my parents liked Mr. Mole from the very beginning. They liked him for the same reasons that I did: he is incredibly caring, considerate, and supportive (plus a whole long list of other admirable qualities). Of course, they also liked him because he made me happy. Yet during the holidays, I was able to see how much they love him ? and not just as my future husband but as their own son.

Seeing this subtle shift in the relationships between Mr. Mole and my parents made me think about the way that the relationship between Mr. Mole and me is about to change. Now, I know that to some extent that a legal marriage is no more than paperwork. I can?t imagine that I will love Mr. Mole any more just because I signed my name to the marriage license. I can?t imagine that either of us will change in the way we act, talk, sleep, eat, do the dishes, etc., now that we are called husband or wife. Nothing fundamental will change. But I also have to acknowledge that there is a great deal of symbolic value tied up in these legal categories (something that just makes the bans of gay marriage in many states and countries even more problematic and unfair). This symbolism may very well affect the way that we feel or think about ourselves as a couple.

I started thinking specifically about how getting married is going to turn us ? legally, symbolically, magically ? into one household. We become a unified front, both socially and financially. We?ve ignored Judge Judy?s sage advice not to open a joint checking account before the wedding, but we are soon going to be combining all of our assets together. His salary will be mine; my salary will be his. (Same thing with our cars, but the sudden shared ownership of a 1996 Camry or a 1998 GTI is somewhat less of a big deal.) We have no individual debts coming into the marriage, but we will share any that we now undertake together.

I struggle with my feelings about some of these financial implications sometimes. I still feel somewhat uncomfortable with the fact that I bring considerably less money to our household than Mr. Mole does. I know that I support him in a variety of other ways, but they are less quantifiable. I guess I need to stop thinking that ?he? will take care of ?me? and ?my? expenses with ?his? money. Instead, the legal and symbolic meanings of marriage means that ?we? will take care of ?us.?

Illegal Immigration Truth = NBC owns Telemundo, Texas Pacific Group owns Univision.

hehehehehehehe! You already did that for me

City Data banned me. They are strict about naming companies and when I trashed NBC I got in trouble even though their members gave some minor discontent with NBC.

I don't go around and install links in my posts normally even though I did forget to remove my website link from Alipac and didn't get banned. Lots of websites ban members for leaving links. Tea Party Patriots is strict about installing links and talking openly so I stay away from that site.

No, I'm far from a troll with the NBC message I'm posting. A troll would never trash their supported media source.

As for this message being "Shit". I understand your wording but just to clarify this message is the truth and not "Shit". People do read these posts and may interpit the wording the wrong way.

OK, I'm off to post elsewhere but will post here from time to time. Gotta make people aware that massive corruption concerning immigration may exist. I've gotten replies on other sites and the people are really pissed to here it.

Hearing to end today on possible court-martial for Bradley Manning

Pfc. Bradley Manning is accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of US military and diplomatic documents to Wikileaks website. His defense attorneys argue that weak oversight is to blame.

Pre-trial hearings to decide whether to court-martial Pfc. Bradley Manning ? the soldier accused of stealing and leaking hundreds of thousands of top-secret documents to the Wikileaks website ? are expected to end today.?But Private Manning?s adventures in the US military justice system appear to be just beginning.

Manning?s defense attorneys called just two witnesses to the stand to testify about Manning?s emotional outbursts while working in an intelligence analysis unit in Iraq in 2009 and 2010. Highlighting the outbursts could indicate that the defense team hopes to explore the extenuating circumstances behind Mannings actions of leaking 400,000 field reports from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as some 250,000 US State Department cables.

Given the importance of this case ? Manning?s alleged actions have been described as the single largest intelligence breach in US history ? it is unlikely that Manning can avoid a court martial. The question is whether Manning?s defense strategy could reveal more about the inner workings of the US military?s intelligence operations, the missteps of Manning?s superior officers, and even the alleged human rights violations that may have prompted Manning to leak the information in the first place.

Like the 1971 Pentagon Papers case before it, the so-called Wikileaks case is seen by US government officials as devastating to US national security interests, in which the lives of US officials and its informants abroad have been put into danger. Critics of the US see the Wikileaks case, conversely, as a chance to see the truth about alleged US misdeeds during the past decade since Sept. 11, 2001, a time during which the Bush and Obama administrations set aside longtime US laws against torture and indefinite detention.

Internet Changes How We Remember

Head Lines | Mind & Brain Cover Image: January 2012 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

Knowing we can retrieve facts online later alters memory

Image: Mike Kemp/Corbis

Four years ago Columbia University psychologist Betsy Sparrow turned to her husband after looking up some movie trivia online and asked, ?What did we do before the Internet?? Thus, Sparrow set out to investigate how Google, and all the information it proffers, has changed how people think. Four psychology experiments later Sparrow has her answer, which was published in Science this past August. ?[The Web] is an external memory storage space, and we make it responsible for remembering things,? she says.

In one of Sparrow?s experiments she presented two groups of undergraduates with trivia statements. Individuals in one group, who were told they could retrieve the information later on their computer, had worse recall than subjects in the other group, who knew in advance they could not do so. Together with the rest of her results, this finding suggests that Internet users have learned to remember how to find a fact rather than the fact itself.

Does this mean the Web is dumbing us down? Certainly not, she says: ?Memory is much greater than memorizing.? Our brain may simply be adapting to present circum?stances, Sparrow points out. ?We?re in an Internet world.?

Terry helps Chelsea protect draw at Tottenham

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:39 p.m. ET Dec. 22, 2011

LONDON (AP) -Chelsea captain John Terry withstood a torrent of jeers from Tottenham fans following his charge for racist abuse to protect a vital point for his side on Thursday.

After Emmanuel Adebayor's shot had beaten Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech in stoppage time, Terry diverted the ball away from goal - a decisive deflection that earned his side a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane.

"He anticipated the situation at the end - it was a big opportunity for Tottenham," Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said. "It shows his character and strength and personality."

A day earlier, Terry became the first footballer in England to receive a criminal charge for racially abusing an opponent. He will appear in court in February after he was alleged to have used racist language toward Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand in an October Premier League match.

"His performances have increased since the incident happened," Villas-Boas said. "His commitment, quality and talent are never in doubt. He's completely focused to the cause of this football club."

With chants raining down from the White Hart Lane stands, even Chelsea's official Twitter feed described Terry as its "under-fire skipper."

So denying Tottenham a victory was all the sweeter, after Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge canceled out Adebayor's eighth-minute opener.

"I am very proud of the players under a lot of adversity - there was a good spirit of resistance," Villas-Boas said. "It is a moral win."

But Chelsea remains fourth in the standings, two points behind Tottenham and just a point above Arsenal. Leader Manchester City is 11 points ahead of Chelsea.

In north London, the Blues, though, had to recover from initially being completely overwhelmed at a ground where they have not won since 2005.

Back after missing Sunday's win over Sunderland through injury, Gareth Bale easily went past Jose Bosingwa on the left flank and sent a loss cross into the penalty area.

Cech, who was at fault for the equalizer Chelsea conceded at Wigan at the weekend, failed to grasp the cross, allowing Adebayor to beat him to the ball and score his sixth goal in as many games.

After allowing Chelsea to regain a foothold in the game and taking the sting out of Tottenham's attack, the equalizer came after 23 minutes.

Rafael van der Vaart's attempted sliding tackle diverted the ball onto Ashley Cole's arm and it fell kindly for the Chelsea full back, who crossed for Sturridge.

The England striker easily evaded his marker, Ledley King, to rush forward unchallenged and score his 10th goal of the season. Tottenham's appeals for handball against Cole were waved away by referee Howard Webb.

"It certainly bounced up on to his hand," Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said. "Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't."

Branislav Ivanovic was soon forced off with an apparent thigh injury. With Alex out of favor and not even on the bench, Paolo Ferreira had to come on at right back with Bosingwa shifting to central defense alongside Terry.

Chelsea was forced to make a second change just before half time, with John Obi Mikel limping off with a groin problem and replaced by Oriol Romeu.

"It doesn't look serious - muscle injuries - and we'll see the amount of damage they have," Villas-Boas said. "Hopefully they can recover quickly."

Chelsea, though, remained assertive after the break, with Drogba heading over and Terry's header blocked early on.

"Our passing game exploded today to wonderful levels," Villas-Boas said.

Tottenham, though, were sorely missing right winger Aaron Lennon and striker Jermain Defoe, who are sidelined, while Van der Vaart came off with a hamstring problem.

"We lost Rafa at half time and we really lost the balance of our team," Redknapp said. "Without Aaron around it's difficult to find a balance to your team."

Adebayor did find the net again in the 58th with the top of his shoulder, but the goal was disallowed for offside, and minutes later the Togo striker headed wide.

Chasing a win, Fernando Torres was brought on in place of Drogba to make his first appearance in two weeks but couldn't produce his first league goal since September.

And Tottenham maintains the edge over Chelsea in third place.

"We came to Tottenham who are title challengers," Villas-Boas said. "It's always a good point to get. We have been in a worse situation before."

Senate approves payroll tax cut; House next (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Senate on Friday approved a two-month renewal of payroll tax cuts for every American worker and unemployment benefits for millions, steering President Barack Obama toward a convincing victory over Republicans controlling the House.

The measure, expected to be cleared for Obama's signature by the House almost immediately, buys time for negotiations early next year on how to pay for a year-long extension of the two percentage point payroll tax cut, the centerpiece of Obama's jobs agenda.

It would keep in place a salary boost of about $20 a week for an average worker making $50,000 a year.

Successful passage in the House would cap a swift retreat by House Republicans. Their move to force a holiday season confrontation with Obama and Senate Democrats had threatened to hit 160 million workers with a tax increase on Jan. 1. But it backfired badly.

Just 24 hours earlier, House leaders had insisted the only way to prevent that tax hike and a phase-out of jobless benefits for people out of work for more than six months was to pass a full-year renewal.

Friday's version of the bill would put off until January a battle over finding almost $200 billion in spending cuts and new fees to finance the 2-point Social Security tax cut, extend jobless benefits averaging around $300 a week and prevent doctors from absorbing a big cut in Medicare payments through 2012.

Those goals had been embraced by virtually every lawmaker in the House and Senate but had been derailed in a quarrel over demands by House Republicans for immediate negotiations on a long-term extension bill. Senate leaders of both parties had tried to barter such an agreement among themselves a week ago but failed, instead agreeing upon a 60-day measure to buy time for talks next year.

Thursday's decision by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to cave in to the Senate came after days of criticism from Obama and Democrats. But perhaps more tellingly, GOP stalwarts including strategist Karl Rove and the Wall Street Journal editorial board warned that if the tax cuts were allowed to expire, Republicans would take a political beating that would harm efforts to unseat Obama next year.

House GOP arguments about the legislative process and what the "uncertainty" of a two-month extension would mean for businesses were unpersuasive, and Obama took the offensive.

94% Hugo

"Hugo" is magic; the kind of tender, heartfelt magic that just doesn't inhabit any modern films these days. It's one of the most pure and cleansing cinematic experiences in memory. Though it is unlike anything the master has helmed before... it's pure Scorsese.Though "Hugo" has been billed and advertised as a children's film, it's deliberate pace and meticulous craft and attention to detail will appeal to older viewers. It's rich visuals and stunning cinematography and art direction will astound. Children might enjoy the adventure and the great young leads, but most of the themes and plot will go over their heads. They definitely will love the 3D, but so will adults. It's the best use of the format since "Avatar," and in ways surpasses that film with straight ambition. This was a very personal film for Scorsese and it shows in nearly every frame. It's a film of two parts; the studied seclusion of the title character Hugo, and later an homage to the earliest moments in cinema, subtlety advocating the importance of film preservation. Those are all things that Scorsese knows much about. We see why he was the perfect fit for this material. But when a film revolves almost entirely around a youth character, casting can be a make or break situation. This calls for actors well beyond their years. Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas) is not only stellar and believable; he give one of the most impressive and expressive child performances ever. The emotion he is able to convey (without dialogue even) is staggering. Also brilliant is Ben Kingsley who is sure to nab a wealth of nominations at years end. Chloe Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory, and Emily Mortimer (along with many others) round out a strong and layered ensemble. As mentioned above, the film deals with film preservation. One of the film's greatest, most unforgettable treats is the recreation of early landmark moments in cinema... specifically the films of Georges Melies (who is played by Kingsley in the film). These sequences are charming and frankly incredible feats. They are also in 3D which in itself is one of the great uses of the format.Like any Scorsese picture, his unrivaled directorial prowless is the real star of the show. As expected, he continues to innovate, leave his comfort zone, and redefine himself as a filmmaker. It's safe to say no other film looks and feels like this. It's safe to say there is no greater living filmmaker. This film deserves your attention. This is a brilliant piece of entertainment and filmmaking that bleeds passion and ranks with Scorsese's best. I'm not saying that lightly, but I will say this; if you're willing to skip "Hugo," be prepared to skip one of this decade's finest features.

Madison, Eugene Mayors Make Community-Based Rose Bowl Wager

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin and Eugene, Ore., Mayor Kitty Piercy have made a friendly wager on the Rose Bowl that will make either community a winner pending the outcome of the Wisconsin Badgers and Oregon Ducks match up.

"We wanted to develop a wager that could benefit our entire community and particularly those most in need," Soglin said in a news release.

Each mayor has committed to privately raising $500 if their team loses. The money will then be used for tools for Habitat for Humanity organizations in either Madison or Eugene.

"Each of us will raise the money privately and no city funds are involved," Soglin said. "This is a great program and we both want to support it."

Both mayors said they are aware of the growing need for shelters and services for the homeless. They each credit Habitat for Humanity for the work it is doing. But each also is rooting on their favorite teams in the Rose Bowl.

"I am looking forward to our local workers benefiting from new tools because I truly expect our Badgers to win," Soglin said.

Piercy replied, "In your dreams Mayor Soglin, but seriously, whoever benefits from this wager serves those in need in our country and that?s what it?s all about."

The Badgers and the Ducks kick off the 2012 Rose Bowl on Jan. 2 at 4 p.m.

5 things you need to know about Tintin

You've seen the trailers, listened to filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson and heard tell that this Tintin character is quite popular in some places.

Like the whole rest of the world.

So who is he, and why should you care? Read on as our resident Tintin nerd gives you the facts you need before heading in to see "The Adventures of Tintin," which opens Tuesday.

REVIEW: How good is Spielberg's Tintin?

1. Tintin is ageless: Created in 1929 by Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi (aka Herge), the original comic strips were black and white and cranked out for a children's newspaper supplement that Remi edited (which may explain the rambling nature of some of the tales). Remi, himself unsure of how old Tintin was supposed to be, gave the character's age as roughly 13 or 14 at the start and a few years older by the end. That must explain how the kid with no family was able to pick up skills like piloting planes and helicopters, racing cars, motorcycles and tanks and performing the duties of an astronaut (along with his dog). Also, for a youngster, he's pretty good with his fists?and a pistol.

2. Tintin needs a visit from child protective services: Only in a comic strip could a boy with no parents, a demanding job and an alcoholic sea captain for a best friend be considered family entertainment. That said, this boy reporter ? who frankly never, ever seems to file a story ? creates a family of his own over the course of his 23 adventures, including a range of pals that include a pair of near-identical policemen, Thompson &Thomson (who are not twins, though?note the differently spelled names); a clumsy, hard-of-hearing scientist and inventor, Professor Calculus; and drunken sailor Captain Haddock, who spews the most colorfully G-rated curses in comics. Plus, Snowy, arguably the best of the always famished, sass-talking comic pet. (Yeah, we said it, Garfield.)

3. Tintin gets around: From the Soviet Union and Shanghai to chasing a Chicago gangster into the fading American West, this Belgian kid has traveled all over the world ? and beyond (see: "Destination Moon"). And while some of his capers have occurred in purely made-up lands like Borduria, Khemed, Syldavia and Nuevo Rico, the results aren't always to everyone's liking. To wit, his journey to the real-life Congo reportedly features such unpleasant racial stereotypes (not to mention a later-replaced scene in which he blows up a rhino with a stick of dynamite) that it's no longer published.

4. Tintin is controversial: As mentioned above, Tintin's Congo adventures have been deemed too unpalatable to merit publishing anymore, but some critics further argue that the books teem with broad, bigoted stereotypes of the many races Tintin, Captain Haddock and Snowy encounter in their journeys. As well, Herge continued to publish his works while under German occupation of Brussels during World War II, leading to accusations of being a collaborator and/or Nazi sympathizer. Though he was cleared of the charges eventually, the taint never completely washed away. Supporters, however, point out that while the books do contain some stereotypes, the character of Tintin himself acts consistently as a moral, upright and unbigoted friend to people of all races (if not rhinos), something of a rarity in the days the books were written.

5. Tintin is hugely popular: Not only have the 23 adventures remained in print over the years, but the tales have been adapted before, as an animated TV show, a BBC radio adaptation, a pair of French live-action films and much more. But as cool as the new film looks in its behind-the-scenes motion-capture makings, it's hard to top Herge's simple drawings of a boy, his dog and his often-drunken pal traipsing through the jungles, the snowy mountains and the barren moonscape for adventure at its best.

Troops assault Egypt protesters after 8 killed (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Soldiers baton-charged demonstrators in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Saturday a day after street clashes killed eight people and wounded more than 300, marring the first free election most Egyptians can remember.

The violence highlights the tensions in Egypt 10 months after a popular revolt toppled President Hosni Mubarak.

The army generals who replaced him have angered some Egyptians by seeming reluctant to give up power. Others back the military as a force for badly needed stability during a transition to democracy.

Protesters fled into side streets to escape the troops in riot gear, who grabbed people and battered them repeatedly even after they had been beaten to the ground, a Reuters journalist said. Shots were fired in the air.

Television footage showed soldiers pulling down protester tents and setting them on fire.

The army assault followed skirmishes between protesters and troops. Some protesters had been throwing stones near fire brigade vehicles trying to douse a burning building.

The bloodshed follows unrest in which 42 people were killed in the week before November 28, the start of a phased parliamentary poll that is empowering Islamist parties repressed during the 30-year Mubarak era, when elections were routinely rigged.

Voting in the second round of a tortuous election process seen as part of a promised transition from army to civilian rule by July passed off peacefully on Wednesday and Thursday.

Friday's clashes pitted thousands of demonstrators against soldiers and plainclothes men who were seen at one point hurling rocks from the roof of a parliament building.

The army-appointed prime minister, Kamal al-Ganzouri, blamed the violence on protesters he accused of attacking the cabinet and parliament buildings that security forces had to defend.

"I still say we will not confront any peaceful protests with any kind of violence even by words," he said on state television in his first public comments on the disturbances.

"I confirm that the army has not used gunfire," he said, reiterating a military statement on Friday.

Ganzouri, 78, said eight people had been killed and 125 of the 303 wounded were in hospital. Thirty security guards outside parliament had been hurt and 18 people had gunshot wounds.

MISKICKED FOOTBALL?

State media gave conflicting accounts of what sparked the violence. State media cited some people saying a young man went into the parliament compound to retrieve a miskicked football, but was harassed and beaten by police and parliamentary guards.

But they also cited others who said the young man had prompted scuffles by trying to set up camp in the compound.

Among the dead was a senior official of Egypt's Dar al-Iftah, the body that issues Islamic fatwas (edicts).

A new civilian advisory council set up to offer policy guidance to the generals said it would resign if its recommendations on how to solve the crisis were not heeded.

The council announced that it would suspend its meetings until the violence stops. It also asked the army to release all those detained in the trouble and called for prosecution of those responsible and compensation for the victims.

Islamist and liberal politicians decried the army's tactics.

The Muslim Brotherhood, whose party list is leading the election, said in a statement the military must make "a clear and quick apology for the crime that has been committed."

Pro-democracy activists have accused the army of trying to clear a sit-in outside the cabinet office that a small number of protesters has maintained since the November violence.

"Even if the sit-in was not legal, should it be dispersed with such brutality and barbarity?" asked Mohamed ElBaradei, a presidential candidate and former U.N. nuclear watchdog head.

The army council is in charge until a presidential election in June, but parliament will have a popular mandate that the military will find hard to ignore as it oversees the transition.

"The council wants to spoil the elections. They don't want a parliament that has popular legitimacy, unlike them, and would challenge their authority," said Shadi Fawzy, a pro-democracy activist. "I don't believe they will hand over power in June."

Downey dips, 'Sherlock' slips with $40M debut

(AP) ? Sherlock Holmes is facing his worst enemy: declining crowds at theaters as this year's domestic movie attendance dips to the lowest in 16 years.

Robert Downey Jr.'s sequel "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" debuted on top with a $40 million weekend, off 36 percent from the first installment's $62.3 million opening two years ago, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The first movie opened over Christmas weekend, one of the busiest times for movie theaters. Distributor Warner Bros. predicts the "Holmes" sequel, which pits Downey's detective against archrival Professor Moriarty, will make up the lost ground over the holidays.

"The pattern is different," said Dan Fellman, the studio's head of distribution. "What you can put in the bank those nine days before the official Christmas play time, that's the difference between our opening with a bigger number on Christmas day and opening early this time. At the end of the holiday period, we should be in the same place."

The "Holmes" sequel opened in six overseas markets, including the detective's native Britain, and took in $14.7 million to bring its worldwide total to $54.7 million.

After two previous weekends that were Hollywood's worst of the year, overall business was down again, about 12 percent lower than the same weekend in 2010 as Hollywood struggles to interest audiences in its big year-end releases.

Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com, estimated that the number of tickets sold domestically in 2011 will come in below 1.3 billion.

That would be the lowest attendance since 1995, when admissions totaled 1.26 billion. Domestic attendance in modern times peaked at 1.6 billion in 2002 and has been on a generally decline since.

"These low-attendance numbers are taking the gas out of the tank," Dergarabedian said. "All the momentum we had kind of came to a dead stop."

The 20th Century Fox family sequel "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" did even worse than "Holmes." ''Chipwrecked" opened at No. 2 with $23.5 million, about half the business the first two "Chipmunks" movies did on their debut weekends.

The studio had expected a bigger debut, but with schools shutting down for the holidays, Fox executives hope business will pick up.

"We are battling a marketplace issue right now," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for 20th Century Fox. "We cannot make light of that. However, we have a very satisfying, playable movie and the only G-rated movie for Christmas. So as kids get out this week, this is going to help position it for a successful run."

"Chipwrecked" added $14.5 million in 38 overseas markets, bringing its worldwide total to $38 million.

Tom Cruise and Paramount had a spot of good news. Their action sequel "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol" got off to a healthy start at No. 3 with a $13 million weekend playing exclusively at huge-screen IMAX theaters and some other large-format cinemas.

"Ghost Protocol" goes into general release Wednesday.

The movie already has opened in 36 overseas markets, where it pulled in $68.2 million, putting its global haul at more than $80 million.

With critics praising the movie's spectacular action sequences, "Ghost Protocol" may restore the hitmaker status of Cruise, whose audience became disenchanted with odd antics in the star's personal life five or six years ago.

"I would think any of that is way in the past," said Don Harris, head of distribution at Paramount, which took the unusual step of going early in huge-screen cinemas to build buzz for the general release.

"The plan was always to put the movie out into the best presentation theaters in North America," Harris said. "We hoped that people would recognize how good the movie was and how special it was being treated."

Paramount's comic drama "Young Adult," starring Charlize Theron, had a weak expansion into wider release, finishing at No. 7 with $3.7 million. The film had opened with big numbers a week earlier in a handful of theaters.

At the beginning of 2011, Hollywood's summer and fall lineup looked so strong that studio executives were predicting the industry would break the domestic box-office record of $10.6 billion set in 2009, a mark that was nearly reached again in 2010.

But with less than two weeks left and revenues lagging 4 percent behind last year's, that record is out of reach. The picture is even bleaker factoring in this year's higher ticket prices, which mean attendance is running 5 percent below last year's.

Hollywood still can go out with a bang. Along with the new "Mission: Impossible," the holidays bring two more big thrillers ? Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" and David Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" ? along with Spielberg's historical epic "War Horse" and Cameron Crowe and Matt Damon's family-friendly comic drama "We Bought a Zoo."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," $40 million ($14.7 million international).

2. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," $23.5 million ($14.5 million international).

3. "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol," $13 million ($68.2 million international).

4. "New Year's Eve," $7.4 million.

5. "The Sitter," $4.4 million.

6. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1," $4.3 million.

7. "Young Adult," $3.7 million.

8. "Hugo," $3.63 million.

9. "Arthur Christmas," $3.6 million ($9.7 million international).

10. "The Muppets," $3.5 million ($600,000 international).

___

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

1. "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol," $68.2 million.

2. "Puss in Boots," $30.4 million.

3. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows," $14.7 million.

4. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," $14.5 million.

5. "Arthur Christmas," $9.7 million.

6. "New Year's Eve," $8.9 million.

7. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1," $8.1 million.

8. "Happy Feet Two," $4.4 million.

9. "In Time," $3.3 million.

10. "Rubbeldiekatz," $3.1 million.

World's fastest cells race for the first time

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

Ready, set, go! Competing on microscopic racetracks, human retinal cells scuttle back and forth during a training session for the first World Cell Race.

Organised by the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB), fifty teams submitted cell cultures to designated labs, where they were put through their paces while a camera captured the action for 24 hours. The title of world's fastest cell, announced at the ASCB annual meeting last week, was awarded to fetal bone marrow stem cells submitted by Yuchun Liu from the National University of Singapore for their breakneck speed of 5.2 microns per minute.

The goal wasn't just to have fun: the contest also provides insight into how moving cells contribute to the spread of cancer or the development of embryos and organs. According to Manuel Th?ry, one of the organisers from the Institute of Life Sciences Research and Technologies (iRTSV) in Grenoble, France, it's the first time such a diverse collection of cells were observed migrating under the same conditions, which should allow for interesting comparisons.

If you enjoyed this post, watch a laser gadget play Pong with cells or see the first video of cell movement in early embryos that shows how mutants are formed.
