Gigabyte makes 975g X11 official, claims 'world's lightest' 11.6-inch notebook

Well hello there again, Gigabyte X11. Hot on the heels of yesterday's leak, Gigabyte's just made its 11.6-inch X11 laptop (or is that an Ultrabook?) official. At 975g (2.15 pounds) it claims the title of "lightest notebook on earth" -- and weighs even less on Mars. Design-wise, you're looking at a 16.5mm (0.65 inches) to 3mm (0.19 inches) thin Macbook Air-like body made of real carbon fiber (!) with an aluminum hinge. Under the hood you'll find unspecified third generation Intel Core processors (read Ivy Bridge), 4GB of DDR3 RAM, Mobile Intel HM77 Express chipset with Intel HD Graphics 4000, a 128GB SSD, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0.

Ports include power, USB 2.0 and mini DisplayPort on the left side plus microSD, combo audio and USB 3.0 on the right. While the specs also mention gigabit Ethernet, there's no sign of it anywhere in the press shots. The display is a 1366x768-pixel LED-backlit affair dotted with a 1.3 megapixel webcam. A chiclet keyboard, buttonless trackpad and 4730mAh 7.4V Li-ion polymer battery (likely sealed) complete the package. There's no word on availability, but prices will range from $999 to $1299 with Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional in tow. Expect more information when we get our hands on this sexy beast at Computex next week.

Update: Our colleagues over at Engadget Chinese just got to spend some time with this svelte black slab. Take a look at the gallery below and hit the break for the hands-on video.

In addition, Gigabyte's announcing two 14-inch laptops -- the U2442 and U2440 -- which feature third generation Intel Core processors and NVIDIA GeForce graphics. Unfortunately, we're still busy drooling all over the X11 gallery, so we'll direct you to the full PR after the break for the complete details.

Early exposure to microbes reduces inflammation related to chronic disease later

EVANSTON, Ill. --- American parents may want to think again about how much they want to protect their children from everyday germs.

A new Northwestern University study done in lowland Ecuador remarkably finds no evidence of chronic low-grade inflammation -- associated with diseases of aging like cardiovascular disease, diabetes and dementia.

In contrast, about one-third of adults in the United States have chronically elevated C-reactive protein (CRP). Acute elevations in CRP -- a protein in the blood whose levels rise as part of the inflammatory response -- are important for protecting us against infectious disease. But when CRP is chronically produced, it is associated with chronic diseases.

"In other words, CRP goes up when you need it, but it is almost undetectable when you don't, after the infection resolves," said Thomas W. McDade, professor of anthropology at Northwestern and faculty fellow at the university's Institute for Policy Research. "This is a pretty remarkable finding, and very different from prior research in the U.S., where lots of people tend to have chronically elevated CRP, probably putting them at higher risk for chronic disease."

McDade said the findings build on his previous research in the Philippines, which found that higher levels of microbial exposure in infancy were associated with lower CRP as an adult. Similar exposures during infancy in lowland Ecuador, where rates of infectious disease continue to be high, may have a lasting effect on the pattern of inflammation in adulthood.

"In my mind the study underscores the value of an ecological approach to research on the immune system, and it may have significant implications for our understanding of the links between inflammation and chronic disease," McDade said. "This may be particularly important since nearly three-quarters of all deaths due to cardiovascular disease globally now occur in low- and middle-income nations like the Philippines and Ecuador."

The new research, which was conducted as part of the Shuar Health and Life History Project (http://www.bonesandbehavior.org/shuar/), suggests that higher levels of exposure to infectious microbes early in life may change how we regulate inflammation as adults in ways that prevent chronic inflammation from emerging. Infectious microbes have been part of the human ecology for millennia, and it is only recently that more hygienic environments in affluent industrialized settings have substantially reduced the level and diversity of exposure.

A growing body of research has shown that higher levels of chronic inflammation are associated with diseases of aging like cardiovascular disease, diabetes and dementia. But current research is based almost exclusively on people living in affluent industrialized countries like the United States.

"We simply do not know what chronic inflammation looks like in places like the Ecuadorian Amazon and other parts of the world where infectious diseases are more common," McDade said.

As a result, McDade, director of the Lab for Human Biology Research and director of Cells to Society (C2S): The Center on Social Disparities and Health, and collaborators at the University of Oregon set out to investigate what factors in the environment and during development influence how people regulate inflammation as adults. The study was conducted in lowland Ecuador in a group of 52 adults between the ages of 18 and 49.

Based on current clinical criteria, McDade and colleagues did not find a single case of chronic low-grade inflammation among adults living in the Ecuadorian Amazon. McDade said people in these places are still dying of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, but probably not through processes that involve inflammation.

In terms of population health, McDade said these findings suggest that the association between inflammation and cardiovascular disease frequently reported in the United States may only apply in ecological settings characterized by low levels of exposure to infectious disease.

"It builds on research on chronic inflammation and cardiovascular disease in the U.S. and other affluent, industrialized settings and suggests that patterns seen here may not apply globally," McDade said. "It also suggests that the levels of chronic inflammation we see in the U.S. are not universal, and may be a product of epidemiological transitions that have lowered our level of exposure to infectious microbes."

Misconception: divorce harms children | Pittsburgh Family Law ...

In divorce cases in Pennsylvania and anywhere else in the country, matters are often made more complicated when the best interests of a child or multiple children must be considered. Parents may have to set aside any tensions they feel toward one another, and work together to settle issues in a manner that will most benefit their children.

In some cases, parents may think that staying together instead of obtaining a divorce is the best option for children. The disagreements and differences often do not cease and ultimately could cause more tension in a marriage that already isn't working. This tension and strain is often felt by the children.

Though there may be a stigma that divorce harms children, in many cases it can be seen that children benefit from divorce. Especially should their parents truly not get along with one another anymore, and spend their time acting negatively toward each other. Some parents may not be aware that their tension and unhappiness can often translate into tension and unhappiness in their children. After a divorce much of this tension can dissolve and everyone from parents to children may get along better.

Additionally, parents who are happy with the custody arrangement negotiated with their attorney may allow children to see both parents still as positive influences in their lives. Parents may interact more positively with each other, as well as fulfill complete "parent" roles from nurturing children to taking care of the home. Divorce is a big change and may come with a difficult adjustment period for children who are accustomed to their parents being one unit. However, in many cases it can be much more beneficial for children to have parents who are happy and positive in their relationships.

Italian museum sets its art on fire to protest lack of government funding

Contending that it would be 'destroyed anyway' because there is no money for preservation work, the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum is burning a piece of its contemporary art collection every day.

By Giulia Lasagni,?Contributor / May 11, 2012

Antonio Manfredi (l.) director of the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum, and Italian artist Rosaria Matarese burn one of Matarese's creations in front of the museum, near Naples, Italy, Wednesday, April 18. Manfredi is burning paintings to protest a shortage of funds. Italy's museums have been strapped for funds for decades, but art world officials say the economic crisis has aggravated the plight.

Perhaps not, but it?s certainly a powerful wakeup call to a government and populace busier worrying about the euro crisis and unemployment statistics.

So says Antonio Manfredi, the director of the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum (CAM), which is located in a small town near Naples, Italy. A little less than a month ago, Mr. Manfredi started to burn the gallery?s collection piece by piece, saying that he didn't have the funds for upkeep. ?Our artworks will end up being destroyed anyway, since institutions are not sustaining us,? he told?Italian daily Corriere della Sera before starting the protest.?

The first to go?was ?Promenade,? a canvas by French artist Severine Bourguignon, who approved of the protest and followed it on Skype. ?I hope that this action will help the Italian government reconsider CAM's situation,? she wrote?in The Guardian. ?Without funds, CAM will be closed and its collection will effectively cease to exist.?

Bourguignon?s piece was followed by many others, as meticulously recorded on CAM?s Facebook page.

Some contended?that the protest is only the provocative performance of an attention-seeking artist ? Manfredi is himself a painter, sculptor, and photographer?? and that because CAM is not technically a public museum, the government doesn't have to support it (although most private museums also receive some funding from the Ministry of Culture).?

But there is no doubt that Italy?s culture sector has been hit hard by cuts because of the economic crisis.?The Italian daily Republica reported?that between 2010 and 2011 the Ministry of Culture?s funding saw a 14.5 percent decrease, dropping from 1.7 million ($2.2 million) to 1.5 million euros.

Despite its world-class cultural wealth, Italy invests in the culture sector less than other countries. According to a government report, in 2010 the Ministry of Culture received only 0.21 percent of the country?s budget (compared, for instance, to 1 percent in France). It?s no surprise then that several prestigious institutions are going through a rough time.?

MAXXI, Rome?s contemporary museum, which opened only two years ago, has predicted losses of 11 million euros for 2012 through 2014. Naples?s and Parlermo?s contemporary art museums are also in deep financial trouble.

In the meantime, some organizations representing workers in the culture sector are protesting against low wages and the lack of adequate benefits. In a letter recently published in Corriere della Sera, they stressed the importance of what they do, which they say goes well beyond the workplace. ?We produce intangible but necessary goods on a daily basis: intelligence, relations, social welfare,? they wrote.

Investing in culture is also the recipe called for by renowned writer Dacia Maraini, who in a recent trip to the United States was surprised by the interest Americans still have in Italian culture and history. ?Shouldn?t we focus obstinately on what we can do best instead of competing with China in producing cheap jeans?? Maraini recently wrote in Corriere della Sera.

Technologies Involved in Business Telephone Systems - The Infofile ...

The size and the specific requirements of your business are determining factors when you are choosing a commercial telephone system. The features of these telephone systems ensure easy and effective communication within the different individuals, teams and departments of the company as well as with others outside the company.

In such a situation, you need to have an idea about the different telephone systems for business and the way they operate. The technology behind each system plays a significant role in the features it offers and the charges it incurs. This helps in determining which would be appropriate for your business.

The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) System: This is essentially a telephone system based on the Internet. If you have a small office with only a few employees, this could be the right system for communications. The system offers a few lines of communication and basic voice mailboxes.

The system requires that you have the necessary computer network bandwidth for calling. Moreover, the system also requires specialised equipment for calling, and therefore, is a suitable solution only if you are using it for a limited number of users. You may be able to use regular telephone equipment with the right adapters.

The Key System: This is a good choice if your business employs 20-30 individuals. This offers basic features for communication. However, this system is quite inexpensive, making it an ideal small business telephone system. This is the reason it is the common phone system used by small businesses.

If all you want is to ensure ease of communication between the employees working in your office, this is the right option for you. Internal extensions and essential features are available with this system. The chances of customisation are minimal in this business telephone system.

The PBX System: This is a suitable choice if you need a phone system that can cater to a large business. The system uses onsite switching equipment for call routing between internal and external lines. Even if you have few employees presently, it is better to opt for this system if you plan to expand your business and employ more people soon.

This business telephone system offers numerous features for a business, including auto-attendant, auto dialling, call forwarding, conference calling, call waiting, and call transferring. Moreover, you can also integrate the system with internal extensions, fax machines and modems.

How do you know which phone system would be right for your business? If you operate a small business with 4-5 employees, a VoIP phone system may be suitable for your company. However, if you are planning to employ more people soon, this would not be a good option, as any addition to the system would imply higher costs.

The PBX system would be ideal if you have more than 35 employees and are planning to appoint more. This would also be necessary if your business requires sophisticated communication features. You may opt for virtual PBX system where this is layered on to your existing telephone system to provide your business with the necessary features,

Jessica Sanchez: Screwed Over by New American Idol Contract

Jessica Sanchez picked the wrong year to finish second on American Idol.

In the wake of this singer's loss to Phillip Phillips, an Associated Press report took a look into changes made to the season 11 contract for all contestants.

It states that this year's runner-up is only entitled to a "developmental" deal with 19 Recordings, something that could net Sanchez between $30,000-$60,000, depending on the number of single's commissioned by the label. This marks the first time in history the second-place finisher has not been awarded a guaranteed album and $175,000 advance.

Jessica Sanchez Photograph

Yes, Jessica could still see that figure if 19 Records does order a CD; and she'll also bank $50,000 for all future Idol-sponsored public appearances.

But why the change in guarantees?

Because ratings for American Idol are down; a majority of albums from show finalists have not done well; and because the music industry overall has changed: in 2011, nearly 1.3 billion singles were purchased, while only 331 million albums were moved.

Phillips, meanwhile, received $300,000 and an album contract for winning.

How Estate Planning Is Like Baking | Cooper, Adel & Associates

?

Issue One of the Domestic Estate Planning Series by Melissa Reynard

?

Ok, so some of you may be wondering how on earth frosting a bunch of cupcakes is anything at all like Estate Planning.? And some of you would be right, there are some differences, but there are a lot of similarities as well.

?

Estate Planning, like Baking, involves multiple ingredients, no person?s ?recipe? is the same, and it?s often wise to refer to your cookbook?..er??I mean Elder Law Specialist when attempting anything complicated or for that matter easy.? After all, have you ever put that wonderful looking cake batter in the oven, only to have it fall as soon as it comes out?? Do you lament the wide cracks that appear in your bread? ? These issues are small when faced with the perils of not planning your estate and throwing ?ingredients? every which way, hoping for the best.

?

So let?s talk about ingredients.? When most people think of estate planning, they think of a will, maybe a trust, and not a whole lot else.? Sure, there are wills, and trusts, but you should also plan for other things, like Healthcare decisions and Powers of Attorney.? ? How could a catastrophic illness like a stroke play into your plan?? Your bank accounts, IRA?s, Insurance, and other policies likewise all have a place in your estate planning. ?

?

Each person is going to need different things from their estate planning as well.? There is no one size fits all to these types of things.? Some may have property and farmland they want to consider while other people live in an apartment but have invested heavily their whole lives.? Incomes are different, assets are different;? and as you well know, that recipe for the brownies you got at that party, tastes nothing like your last batch of brownies you made from another recipe.

?

So who?s to help you with your estate planning?? An Elder Law Specialist.? Just like a baker has their trusty cookbook, an Elder Law Specialist specializes in just that, estate planning!? They can help you develop a will or trust, advise on important documents, and give ideas for your financial accounts.? The offices of Cooper, Adel and Associates offer seminars to give you a better idea on what we can do for you, and while it may not be as fun as a cooking class, it?s definitely just as informative.

Housing Inspections: Why Local Is Generally Better

There?s one thing each and every home buyer or seller ought to know before even considering hiring a home building inspector: Local is always your best bet. If you are purchasing a home within Atlanta, you?ll need someone with first-hand professional experience assessing Atlanta homes. Likewise, a good inspector with prior experience inspecting houses within Pennsylvania shouldn?t assume that he or she will be completely versed in inspecting properties in Georgia. The local weather conditions play too great of a part to ignore. Without having the help of a talented, locally trained property inspector, you could wind up purchasing a home that has numerous costly long-term problems.

Environmental Concerns

Some of you may be wondering just why a home inspection is needed to begin with. To get a clear understanding, ask someone who purchased a home without the guidance from a skilled Atlanta home inspector. Imagine buying a home that?s infested with termites or that?s gradually slipping from the foundation without having ever actually suspecting that anything might have been wrong until the repair invoices start to pile up. Millions of people were evicted from their homes because of the sudden downturn in the economy and, regrettably, many of those homes sat empty for several months or years before home buyers began to make a move. With each and every passing year that nobody had been maintaining all of these properties, they became increasingly more susceptible to environmentally-mediated deterioration. If you?re not really interested in using a home building inspector, you?re taking an enormous risk with your largest investmentfinancial of your life.

It?s Simple Economics

It does not take a brain surgeon? to comprehend the simple economics at play when using a home building inspection service. Using a home building inspector might cost a few hundred dollars but, if you decide to proceed without one, you could potentially purchase a home that needs thousands and thousands of dollars for major repairs. If you feel this can?t really happen to you or your family, think again. Some of the most expensive house repairs are the ones that are extremely difficult to quickly detect with the standard general home evaluation. Since Atlanta home inspectors have the experience and specialized training to identify problems often seen in? The Atlanta, GA region, they can locate these major maintenance requirements, putting need for repairs right back on to the shoulders of the home owner or help negotiate the home at a significantly reduced sales price.

The very worst mistake a home buyer can ever do is go without the guidance of a highly experienced Atlanta home inspector. You can either take an enormous risk and hope that the home you?re purchasing is in good shape or you can employ a home inspection service? and sleep easy through the night knowing that you?re making a good investment. Let common sense reign and make sure your home becomes a pleasurable investment.

Everything about Realtors in Vancouver - Real-estate Articles ...

Who Are They?
Realtors are professionals who work as a connecting bridge in between the buyer and seller. Along with that, many real estate agents also work as rental managers wherein they introduce tenant to landlords. There is a difference in between real estate agents and realtors Vancouver. In order to get the title of realtor, a real estate agent must be a member of National Association of Realtors and also must possess many other qualification and educations. Therefore, they are better than a normal real estate agent.

What Do They Do?
Realtors in Vancouver bring together the buying and selling parties, enable them to communicate with each other and perform their deal. In case of rental management, they introduce the tenant to the landlord and discuss about the renting process.

In return, they receive a fixed percentage of selling price in case of a sale or a part of the rent for the renting unit, mostly from the landlord.

How Do They Do It?
People who want to sell or rent their property leave the details with the realtors Vancouver. The interested party gets the access to the property by contacting a realtor. The agent then evaluate the requirements of buying party or tenant and show them the properties best matching their needs. This is how they work as a hub in between these two interested parties.

Why Should I Hire One?
First and foremost importantly is to protect you from hassle of documentation and threat of investing in a wrong transaction. Purchasing or selling a property requires a pile of documentation and it may not be possible for one understanding everything by him. Realtors in Vancouver can be a great helping hand as they are well aware of entire process and can accomplish it quite comfortably. Along with that, real estate is a big investment and you may end up regretting if not investing in right property. Worth Noting.

It?s a well spread misconception that a realtors Vancouver agent work for both buyer and seller. This way, either of the party may feel his convenience is being underestimated. But this is not the case. Either a realtor works for the seller (if he is seller?s agent), or for the buyer (in case of a buyer?s agent). In some cases, a realtor may work for the transaction itself, neither the seller nor the buyer. Their main objective is to sell the property to the most suitable person. However this is only the case with dual agency/transaction as the law and rules does not permit any realtor to act in favor of any party.

If you are still not sure about the relationship between you and realtors in Vancouver, don?t hesitate to ask. More questions you will ask better will be the chances of making a profitable deal.

Groupon reportedly experimenting with Square competitor

Groupon reportedly experimenting with Square competitor

Square, PayPal, Intuit, Verifone -- the mobile payments field (and we're not talking wallets here) is seriously crowded already. So, the question is then, why on Earth would Groupon want to join the fray? We're not entirely sure, but VentureBeat is reporting the coupon service is preparing to do just that. According to a source within the company, Groupon is testing card-reading dongle and payment platform with surprisingly aggressive pricing. According to the insider, transaction fees will be 1.8 percent, on top of a $0.15 base charge. By comparison, square charges a flat 2.75 percent. Interestingly, the source also claims that Groupon is handing out, not just free readers, but free iPod touches to plug them into. The move makes obvious sense since the company snatched up Kima Labs, makers of TapBuy, in February. Besides, it could easily integrate its discount offers with the platform as a value added service. None of this is confirmed just yet but, we certainly wont be surprised if this rumor pans out.

HBT: Steinbrenners selling Yankees? Likely not

I tell ya, if George Steinbrenner were alive he?d be so mad at how the Yankees have been playing he?d get rid of the team! THE ENTIRE TEAM!

Rumors are flying in Major League Baseball and New York banking circles that the family that has owned Major League Baseball?s premiere franchise since Cleveland shipbuilder George Steinbrenner purchased the club for $8.8 million in 1973 is exploring the possibility of selling the Yankees.

Multiple baseball and finance sources told the Daily News they are hearing that the team the Steinbrenner family has led to seven World Series titles could be put on the block in the wake of the record sale price of $2.175 billion the Los Angeles Dodgers went for in April.

While it would seem to make decent financial sense to at least consider the possibility ? if the Dodgers are worth a couple of billion the Yankees have to be worth more and, really, how much higher can franchise values go? ? team president Randy Levine denied the rumors, saying that ?there is absolutely, positively nothing to this.? Hal Steinbrenner called it??complete fiction.?

What?s more, the speculation in the article about it being a good time because the team is aging should probably be ignored. Because really, the value of the Yankees is not something that is going to crater or peak based on a ten-game swing of wins from one year to the rest. If they are ever sold it will be because someone is valuing them as an enduring entertainment and marketing brand, not as a team that, in a given year, may contend in the AL East.

That said, (a) if I was thinking of selling the team I wouldn?t admit it either; and (b) again, how much higher can franchise values climb? ?If someone wanted to give you, I dunno, three billion for the Yankees, wouldn?t you be an idiot not to take it? That?s the likely source of this stuff ? banker speculation and out-of-the-loop figurin?, not any real interest on the Yankees part to sell.

UPDATE: This seems to have less meat to it than a vegan cookout:

But hey, it?s fun to make stuff up too. ?Also: Bill Madden of the Daily News is apparently on New York radio this morning being asked about it and people who are listening are saying that he?s all but saying it?s a b.s. story but is stopping just short given that, you know, his colleagues wrote it. ?Oh, wait, his name is second on the byline. ?Great job, Spink Award Winning Writer Bill Madden!
