We've Discovered Skin Cancer on Wild Fish | UPROXX

Animals, by and large, don?t get cancer. Whether this is a consequence of something else killing them or luck, nobody really knows. But it is always interesting whenever we find a species that can get cancer, and we can add the coral trout to those numbers.

For once this isn?t pollution?s fault: the fish with skin cancer lesions were found in pristine waters around the Great Barrier Reef. It may be due to ozone depletion increasing the amount of radiation, so pollution is kind of at fault, but at least we?re not dumping fish-cancer chemicals into the ocean, that we know of.

It?s interesting as more than a scientific oddity: Studying cancers in other animals helps us understand why cancer forms in the first place.

Also, Fish Cancer would be a great name for a band.

Health, faith and birth control | Health and Fitness

The following editorial appeared in the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday, Aug. 1:/pp Several Roman Catholic organizations have challenged Obama administration rules requiring religious colleges and hospitals (but not churches themselves) to offer preventive health care, including contraceptive coverage, with no deductibles or co-pays. Even though the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of most of the Affordable Care Act (?Obamacare?), the courts still have to decide whether those institutions are exempt from the contraception requirement under a federal law called the Religious Freedom Restoration Act./pp Our view is that church-affiliated charitable and educational institutions should offer such coverage, even if they are self-insured. Not all of their employees are Catholic, and even many Catholics make a personal choice to use contraceptives. The Obama administration?s decision to provide only a narrow religious exemption is the right one./pp That said, religious colleges and hospitals are at least part of a church?s religious mission, so the discussion makes sense. The same cannot be said for a company that sells heating, ventilation and air conditioning services. Yet a federal judge in Colorado is taking seriously a complaint by Hercules Industries, an HVAC company owned by a Catholic family, that the contraceptive mandate violates its rights under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Senior U.S. District Judge John L. Kane issued a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of the contraceptive mandate against Hercules./pp Enacted in 1993 with bipartisan support, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act allows believers to opt out of generally applicable laws that ?substantially burden? their free exercise of religion ? unless the law in question serves a compelling governmental interest and is the least restrictive means of furthering that interest./pp Kane suggested that the Obama regulations weren?t the least restrictive means to achieve contraceptive coverage. For example, he said, the government could instead create a contraception insurance plan with free enrollment or establish a tax credit or deduction for contraceptive purchases. (Good luck trying to get Congress to approve one of those alternatives.)/pp It?s troubling that Kane sees a for-profit secular company as in any way analogous to a parochial school or Catholic hospital. It?s not a new idea: Earlier this year Senate Republicans unsuccessfully proposed a bill to let any employer drop health coverage that didn?t comport with his religious or moral beliefs. But it is a bad idea. Reasonably interpreted, neither the Religious Freedom Restoration Act nor the First Amendment provides an escape hatch for profit-making businesses from the ACA, any more than it exempts them from civil rights laws.

'Battleship' dud hits Comcast earnings in 2Q

NEW YORK (AP) ? "Battleship" failed to sink Comcast's second-quarter earnings as strong results from cable operations overcame returns the box-office flop.

The Philadelphia-based cable company, the country's largest, is reporting net income of $1.35 billion, or 50 cents per share, for the April-to-June period. That's up 32 percent from $1.02 billion, or 37 cents per share, a year ago.

Analysts polled by FactSet have been expecting earnings of 48 cents per share for the latest quarter.

Revenue rose 6 percent to $15.2 billion, matching analyst expectations. Some of the increase was due to Comcast buying out another investor in the Universal Orlando theme parks last July. Excluding that effect, revenue rose 3.5 percent.

In cable, average monthly fees were up 8 percent from last year to $148.57.

Study projects growing demand for commercial spaceflights

Commercial suborbital spaceflights should bring in between $600 million and $1.6 billion in revenue in their first decade of operations, according to a study commissioned by the U.S. and Florida governments and released on Wednesday.

Tourism drives about 80 percent of the demand for suborbital flights, which reach about 63 miles above the planet's surface before plunging back through the atmosphere.

The thrill ride gives fliers a few minutes to float in microgravity and a view of the Earth set against the blackness of space.

Virgin Galactic, an offshoot of Richard Branson's London-based Virgin Group, is one of six firms developing reusable suborbital spaceships, an analysis by The Tauri Group of Alexandria, Virginia, found.

Prices currently range from $200,000 for a ride on Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo, a six-passenger, two-pilot vehicle currently undergoing testing, to $95,000 for a flight on privately held XCOR Aerospace's planned two-seater Lynx vehicle.

Virgin Galactic, which is aiming to begin commercial service around 2014, already has $70 million in deposits from 536 people, Chief Executive George Whitesides said at a related congressional hearing on Wednesday.

The Tauri Group believes there are about another 7,500 wealthy people waiting in the wings.

"Our analysis indicates that about 8,000 high-net-worth individuals from across the globe are sufficiently interested and have spending patterns likely to result in the purchase of a suborbital flight ? one-third from the United States," the report said.

"We estimate that about 40 percent of the interested, high-net-worth population, or 3,600 individuals, will fly within the 10-year forecast," it added.

The study, which included surveys of 200 people with a net worth of least $5 million, valued the fledgling industry at $600 million in its first decade, based on current market conditions and interest.

The market could be worth nearly three times that if marketing and consumer interest grows in the wake of successful flights, the study said.

"Further potential could be realized through price reductions and unpredictable achievements such as major research discoveries, the identification of new commercial applications, the emergence of global brand value, and new government (especially military) uses for suborbital reusable vehicles," the study said.

After tourists, the next biggest group of potential users are in the research community. Other potential markets include technology flight demonstrations, media and public relations, education, satellite launching, remote sensing and suborbital travel from one destination to another, a technology that is likely beyond the study's 10-year time frame.

The $277,000 study, titled ?"Suborbital Reusable Vehicles: A Ten-Year Forecast of Market Demand," was paid for by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees commercial spaceflight, and the state of Florida, which is home to NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

Timeshare Industry International Research Finds Product Demand ...

ARDA logARDA International Foundation Studies Focus on Global Shared Vacation Ownership Market; Data Among International Timeshare Owners, Developers, & Operators

WASHINGTON, DC, (July 31, 2012) ? The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) released the findings of research that surveyed international shared vacation ownership developers and operators, as well as owners globally. Commissioned by the ARDA International Foundation (AIF), the World Wide Shared Vacation Ownership Report: 2012 Edition was conducted by Oxford Economics and The Research Intelligence Group. The research provided a detailed understanding of the vacation ownership industry?s size, composition, and performance in regions around the world. The study not only found that the industry has a significant footprint, but also that it is diverse in its makeup, resilient, and its owners are optimistic about the industry?s future.? With 5,300 resorts in 108 countries, global shared vacation ownership supported more than 1.1 million jobs and generated over $45 billion in direct economic output in 2012.

The study also surveyed owners in 24 different countries and found that nearly two percent of households (20 million owner households) own at least one timeshare product, and that 81 percent of owners vacationed in the past year.? In the United States, ownership represents seven percent of all households, with 83 percent of owners having vacationed in the last twelve months.

?This study further cements the correlation between ownership and vacationing,? said ARDA president and CEO Howard Nusbaum.? ?Across the globe, owners are nearly twice as likely as non-owners to have vacationed in the past 12 months.?? This sentiment is also reflected in the global occupancy rate of 76 percent compared with the worldwide hotel industry, which now has occupancy rates substantially lower than shared vacation ownership properties.

North America offers the most properties with 2,500 resorts or 46 percent of the total market, followed by Europe with 25 percent, Central and South America with 10 percent, Asia with 6 percent, the Caribbean with 5 percent, Africa with 4 percent, and Australasia (Australia, New Zealand, the island of New Guinea, and neighboring islands in the Pacific Ocean) with 2 percent.

The research also found that 80 percent of the properties outside the U.S. offer traditional interval weeks, 28 percent offer biennial products, 27 percent offer points-based products, 27 percent offer trial memberships, 16 percent offer fractional or Private Residence Club ownership products, and 9 percent offer triennial products.

Other findings include data about new ownership and market growth.? Future generations of timeshare owners will likely expand to numerous countries, with particular emphasis on Brazil, Russia, India, and China.? While these countries currently have a relatively small incidence of timeshare ownership (1.6, 1.9, 0.3, and 0.3 percent respectively), there are encouraging indicators such as a heavy representation of the global population, a growing middle class, a positive attitude toward timeshare among non-owners, and consideration of future timeshare ownership among non-owners that point toward timeshare growth within these countries.

For further information about the study, visit http://www.arda.org/aif-foundation/research/worldwidestudy.aspx.

The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) is the Washington D.C.-based professional association representing the vacation ownership and resort development industries.? Established in 1969, ARDA today has over 1,000 members ranging from privately held firms to publicly traded companies and international corporations with expertise in shared ownership interests in leisure real estate.? The membership also includes timeshare owner associations (HOAs), resort management companies, and owners through the ARDA Resort Owners Coalition (ARDA-ROC). For more information, visit www.arda.org or ARDA?s consumer website at www.VacationBetter.org.

AP source: Dems move to formally back gay marriage

(AP) ? The Democratic Party is moving to include support for gay marriage in the official party platform for the first time, a Democratic official said Monday, marking a key milestone for advocates of same-sex unions.

The party's platform drafting committee voted to include language backing gay marriage during a weekend meeting in Minneapolis, the official said. Democratic delegates will formally approve the platform during the party convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

President Barack Obama will officially accept his party's nomination at the convention, which marks the start of the fall campaign blitz. Republican rival Mitt Romney will get the GOP nomination a week earlier during his party's convention in Tampa, Fla.

Seeking to ramp-up enthusiasm among Democrats, party officials said Sunday that former President Bill Clinton will deliver the nominating speech on Wednesday night of the convention. Obama and Biden are to speak on Thursday, the convention's final night.

The Obama campaign and convention organizers on Monday announced that Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic Senate candidate in Massachusetts and a popular figure among liberals, will get a featured speaking role. Warren headed the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the committee that examined the bank bailout. She also was the leading advocate for a consumer financial protection agency, created under the 2010 overhaul of financial regulations. Warren's convention address will precede Clinton's.

Several prominent Democrats began pushing earlier this year for support of same-sex marriage to be included in the convention platform, which lists principles the party supports. The effort got a boost in May when Obama voiced his personal support for same-sex unions.

The Democratic official would not comment on the exact language of the pro-gay marriage plank approved by the drafting committee. It was unclear if the party would call for any national action to legalize gay marriage. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publically about the platform committee's decision.

Obama has said he considers gay marriage to be a state issue, not a federal matter.

Gay rights advocates hailed the decision as a significant step forward.

"I believe that one day very soon the platforms of both major parties will include similar language," said Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign. "There is no more American value than honoring and protecting one's family."

The National Organization for Marriage, which opposes same-sex unions, said the decision sets up marriage as a defining issue in the presidential election.

"We will rally supporters of traditional marriage to make sure they realize that the outcome of the presidential election may determine the future of marriage in our country," said Brian Brown, the organization's president.

The Democratic platform committee's move was first reported by The Washington Blade.
