The North Carolina Master Chorale, one of the southeast?s major symphonic choirs, continues its exciting 70th?anniversary season with a stellar production of Bach?s Easter season choral masterwork, St. John Passion, on Sunday, March 17, at 3 pm at Meymandi Concert Hall.
The matinee performance features the 170-member North Carolina Master Chorale with select choirs from Leesville Road and Sanderson High Schools, a chamber orchestra, and seven outstanding soloists including Lawrence Wiliford, Tenor, in the role of Evangelist; Williams Adams, Baritone, in the role of Jesus; Lewis Moore, Bass, in the role of Pilate; Kathryn Mueller, Soprano; Andria Helm, Mezzo-soprano; Andrew Crane, Tenor; and Donald Milholin, Bass.
Wiliford is renowned for his interpretation of the role of Evangelist and has been lauded as an ?amazing tenor? by the Vancouver Sun.?He is particularly recognized for his interpretation of Bach and other composers of the Baroque period.
North Carolina Master Chorale Music Director, Dr. Al Sturgis, will conduct. ?The Passions are essentially Bach?s operas,? said Sturgis. ?He adeptly conveys every level of dramatic and expressive detail of the Passion story. In taut succession, the chorus portrays the blood thirsty mob, mocking Roman soldiers, then offers tender reflection in the heart wrenching chorales.?
Not to be missed this Easter season, this rare performance captures the drama and depth of Bach?s musical depiction of the passion story and crucifixion.
This concert will be held at Meymandi Concert Hall at the Progress Energy Center in downtown Raleigh. A free pre-concert lecture will be held at 2 pm in the Meymandi Concert Hall lobby given by Dr. Nathan Leaf of the North Carolina State University Department of Music.
Tickets are available via the NCMC box office, or, via Ticketmaster and the Progress Energy Center box office.
