Tony Bernardi, an Edina-based developer with decades of cutting deals in the Twin Cities, died Oct. 4. He was 91.
Born in Casella d?Asolo, Italy, Bernardi came to the Twin Cities in 1962. He started his real estate career in the metro with his purchase of 300 acres in Edina, which eventually became the city?s industrial park, according to a profile piece included with Bernardi?s 2010 induction into the Minnesota Real Estate Hall of Fame.
His development company was Aurora Investments, and Sentinel Management Co. was his residential property management business. The businesses are still in the family: Son Luigi Bernardi presently runs Aurora and daughter Paola Bernardi runs Sentinal.
An engineer by training, who once oversaw oil drilling operations in Iran, Tony Bernardi not only had to learn the ropes of real estate but also had to overcome language barriers.
?We met some people here, and they were very kind to us, and they teach me what to do,? Bernardi said in a video profile accompanying the profile on the website of the University of St. Thomas? Shenehon Center for Real Estate, which hosts the Hall of Fame.
Bernardi formed a business partnership with the late Carlson hotels company founder Curt Carlson to construct and run the Radisson South hotel, which is presently the DoubleTree By Hilton Bloomington ? Minneapolis South.
Projects over the years included residential properties in Bloomington, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Plymouth; retail developments in Burnsville, Chaska and Lakeville, and industrial properties in Edina and Chaska.
Luigi Bernardi says the development of the 3,000-acre Jonathan area of Chaska lasted from the 1970s through the 1990s.
Aurora in recent years got into medical-related real estate, acquiring the 101,000-square-feet Centennial Lakes Medical Building in Edina and developing the 163,000-square-foot Two Twelve Medical Center in Chaska. A roughly 60,000-square-foot addition is in the works for the Chaska center, which is operated by Ridgeview Medical Center.
Besides Luigi and Paola, Tony Bernardi is survived by son Sandro, 10 grandchildren and five great-granchildren.
